Along with those we remember who died this day in 2001, Jim Carroll also passed away on September 11, dying of a heart attack in 2009 at age 60. People Who Died , from Carroll’s debut album Catholic Boy (1980), is probably his best known song, and it is a powerful and poignant tribute to the people in Carroll’s life who were lost to drugs and violence.

I’ve always liked this song. I recently rewatched “E.T.” and I hadn’t remembered this song was in it.
